If It Ain't Broke solicits the participation of four individuals, couples, groups or families who own a broken thing and who might like to see it 'repaired.' On Saturday, May 15th at the Igloo Gallery, the artists will host one-and-a-half hour 'consultations' regarding your thing, discussing its condition and imagining possible repairs. Repairs will be taking place on-site on Monday, May 17th. You are welcome to participate or observe but are not required to attend the repair session. For his first solo exhibition in the Northwest, Midwest artist Colin Matthes will participate in a short-term residency at Igloo gallery, culminating in a site-specific installation. Colin will be scavenging scrap wood and found objects, combining them with high tech gizmos and survival gear to create a lighthearted, yet poignant installation referencing stage sets, flea markets, unrealized innovations, and trade work. The installation will focus on creating an environment that invites the viewer to imagine small victories in hostile locations while encouraging reflection of how our own lifestyles contribute to creating these dynamics.

Bio:
Colin Matthes, based in Milwaukee, WI, works across a range of media including drawing, sculpture, installation, public art, print, and self-publishes the zine Ideas in Pictures. His artwork has been exhibited in Chicago, New York, Los Angeles, Denmark, Spain, and Austria. Since 2004 he has been an Adjunct Instructor at the Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design, Milwaukee, WI. He has previously shown in Portland with the social art group Justseeds Artist Collborative at PSU, Sea Change Gallery, City Club of Portland, and more. In 2010 Matthes will have solo exhibitions at Igloo Gallery, Portland, OR and Ripon College, Ripon, WI and two-person exhibits at 58 Gallery, Jersey City, NJ (with Nicolas Lampert), The New Art Center, Newton, MA, the University of Massachusetts, Amherst, MA, and Walkers Point Center for the Arts (with Anthony Smith Jr).

WRECKING CRÜE | Opens March 4

In terms of genre, this gathering of artists presents ideas at once related under the umbrella of constructed space, yet provide a variety of challenging perspectives. These artists conspire in a loose category of structural invention, whether found at the foot of a modernist monolith, or in an impossible world flirting with utopian sketchbooks. Wrecking Crüe owes no allegiance to systems or practicality, working in an interstitial state of half-made/half-undone. What these works can do is give our current visual processing a crash course in alternative spatial understanding while questioning how creation takes form in spatial contexts.

The works generate ideas that mash-up relationships: hammers and hypershapes, blueprints and Outer Space, insulation and simulation, rendering philosophical material from impulsive architecture. The works vary from subtle to jarring manipulations of space and the objects contained within, breaking our reliance on architecture as a visual support structure for our environment. They propose the built environment as a playground that keeps building, and rebuilding, itself to explore some unknown, perpetual concourse.

Artists:

Jordan Tull is an established freelance metal fabricator and industrial designer known for his strict geometric installations and physically sophisticated sculpture. His works challenge the understanding of unseen forces that govern visuality, seeking to agitate the structural clarity of objects in space.

Josh Smith is a sculptor and furniture maker in Portland OR. His work explores notions of utopian space in relation to modernist philosophies. His work reinvestigates modernist principles using the language of the architectural model and the illustrated proposal, presenting latent potential of the Idea in flux.

Salvatore Reda lives and works in Portland, OR. His artwork delves into architecture as fantasy, researching the location of the familiar in a synthetic, abstract sense. Detail, beauty and lyrical abstraction are preoccupations of his work. His paintings and video works have been exhibited at the Santa Monica Museum of Art, Adamski Gallery of Contemporary Art, Aachen, and Basel Switzerland.

Joshua Pavlacky is a Portland native and a founder and gallery coordinator of Appendix Project Space, an experimental installation site in NE Portland. Inspired by Landscape Urbanism and Infrastructure, his work explores the landscape as a conceptual, perceptual and physical infrastructure capable of seeding the development of urban and ecological systems that are better suited to the ethical and practical concerns of the 21st century.

Jeff Jahn is a Portland based curator, critic, installation artist and photographer particularly interested in the conceptual loading and kinesthetic potential of man made spaces.

FLOATER Opens January 29

"Floater" is a two-person exhibition showing large snap shot portraits by northwest photographer Kelly O and the documentary film ‘Super Noble Brothers’ by Los Angeles/Milwaukee based filmmaker Mark Escribano. Kelly O’s vivid portraits capture scenesters in a variety of compromising, naughty and unapologetic moments. Escribano’s film follows the lives of three brothers, small-time celebrities based in Milwaukee and L.A. who are deeply invested in rare record collecting and art making. Both of these artists document an energetic subculture that live a life of careless freedom.

Kelly O is a photographer and the originator of the infamous ‘Drunk of the Week’, published in Seattle’s weekly newspaper ‘The Stranger,’ where she has worked as assistant art director and most recently with photography and multimedia. Her saturated portraits depict city scenesters in compromising moments that some may regret and others will joke about for a lifetime. Her work has been published in SPIN, VICE, Mojo, Kerrang!, and FADER.

Mark Escribano is a Los Angeles based filmmaker. He is a professional photographer and cinematographer for independent films such as ‘Modus Operandi’ and William Shatner's ‘Gonzo Ballet.’ Mark is a recipient of the Peck School of the Arts Mary Nohl Fellowship. His work has been shown at the Dislocation Film Festival in the UK, The Pompidou Museum and both the Milwaukee and Cleveland International Film Festivals. He is also a member of part of 'The White Box Painters' performance troupe. ‘Super Noble Brothers’ will screen this month in Los Angeles as a part of LACE (Los Angeles Contemporary Exhibitions).

ART ATTACK from Project Grow | Opens Dec. 3

The exhibition will present a selection of works from the Project Grow studio and a screening of “Project Grow Goes to France,” accompanied by short videos.

The artists at Project Grow create a wide range of artwork including works on paper, painting, puppets, collage, zines, text work, and video. Project Grow is a social program within the Port City Developmental Center dedicated to the development and promotion of artists with developmental disabilities. Established in 2008, Project Grow consists of an open studio practice, an urban garden supplying CSAS (community supported agriculture subscriptions), and a social outreach agenda.

As an innovative and progressive program, Project Grow continues to lead a dynamic existence including the creation of the North Portland Farm. Project Grow is developing satellite locations in order to accommodate demand and offer fair wage employment to more farmers. The artists who participate and coordinate the programs offered by Project Grow continue to develop unique ways to further successful collaborations between Project Grow and the community at large.

MAY JULIETTE BARRUEL | Opens Nov. 4

May Juliette Barruel's textile-based work and photography address themes of nostalgia, obsession, and loss in an intimate and often voyeuristic fashion. For this exhibition, Barruel investigates a variety of materials in order to reify her experience, and here her voice finds resonance in printed words and embroidered textiles.

Conceptual tapestries and text works accompany Barruel's photographs to create "And Now We Do What We Do", a reflection on a half-life of dating, falling, hoping, pining, loving, and obsessing with its fair share of drunken haircuts, romantic inspirations, ridiculously embarrassing behaviors, and hundreds of hours spent wallowing while listening to songs by Bruce Springsteen, Neil Young, and Bill Callahan. The work is both catharsis and hypothesis, a searching for the existence of truth and love in an endlessly fragmented and often lost contemporary youth culture.

A native of Grenoble, France, May Juliette Barruel lives and works in Portland, OR. She holds a Master of Arts degree in American Literature from l'Université de Paris Sorbonne Nouvelle and a professional certificate from New England School of Photography in Boston, Massachusetts. She has shown work in many cities including Portland, Los Angeles, and Lawrence, KS, and frequently posts images on her blog, à la claire fontaine. Barruel is the curator for Stumptown's downtown gallery and is owner and curator of Nationale, a shop and gallery on Portland's east side.

Signal Fire announces "The Soft Shovel," an exhibition at Igloo Gallery featuring the inaugural residents of the Signal Fire Outpost residency featuring new photography, drawing, and mixed-media sculpture, alongside collaborative video and sound works.

CHRIS LAEL LARSON | opens September 3

Chris Lael Larson is a multi-disciplinary artist, musician and graphic designer who lives and works in Portland, Oregon.

In “Photos and Photo Animations", a series of 48 photographs are disclosed from the artist’s online photographic diary, called, www.natural-lightning.com. The exhibition also includes the artist’s more well-known photo animations, which presently coalesce hand-sequenced digital stills, stop-motion, hand-drawn animation, motion graphics and sound collage with flowing layers of color, shape and texture, together, into surreal meditations on physical and emotional landscapes.

Larson is the founder of music/visual performance group Deelay Ceelay, has performed in over 30 cities nationwide, and has shown his work extensively in galleries, museums, and film festivals.

Larry Mills and Joe Shea | MERGE

Mills & Shea have combined forces to curate exhibits in Santa Barbara, San Francisco & Los Angeles. They have collaborated over the years creating mixed media artworks combining photography, collage, painting, & found objects. Mills has been photographing live music performances in clubs and venues for 15 years, whereas Shea has been a rock poster artist for the legendary Fillmore in San Francisco for the past 13 years. Both artists have produced editorial work for numerous publications, exhibit their art work internationally, and are original members of the "Haley Collective" an arts collective formed in Southern California in the late 90's.

The artists in Cut It Out approach the concept of collage through their individual interpretation of the medium’s specificity, whether reinforcing or challenging the notion of combination.

Jhordan Dahl investigates the relationship between real experience
and fabrication, creating an interior space in which her personal life experience is recreated as a grand homage, similar to a young girl decorating her bedroom with pop icons from teen magazines. Gordon Barnes combines a myriad of materials and content to examine the human condition filtered through his interior universe of dark humor, philosophy, politics, television, and contemporary culture. The fantastic relationships found in depictions of house cats, music culture, cuteness, and the acceptance of death come together with precious humor in Craig Wheat’s work. Ryan Burghard’s magazine collages reference iconic pop culture, critical theory, and personal identity in order to address issues of duality, symbolism, humor, and self-discovery. Dan Ness’s mixed media works draw from relics and artifacts of mechanization, combining disparate elements such as linoleum and Mt. Vesuvius in what he terms “adstraction.”

Chelsea Heffner and Sydney S. Kim will be displaying works on paper and collaborating on installation works.

Chelsea Heffner creates visual systems to process and order the inconsistencies of daily life. Framed through the lens of everyday experience, works address ideas of psychological security while testing the utility of various art forms. Working with painting, screen-printing, and textile design, her work proposes visual relief from feelings of anxiety and confusion.

Sydney S. Kim’s works on paper are an ephemeral experience, her subtle drawings bordering on the imperceptible. The works present an austere emptiness yet suggest potential for unclouded perception and clarity within a subjective experience. When reading a set of messages, flexibility of chronology and lack of order complicates the intended communication.

Both artists are currently MFA candidates at PNCA.

Artist's Reception: THURSDAY, DEC.4, 6-10pm

The work in this show investigates a theory of cannibalism as a process of consumption and reintegration. A form of cannibalism is the ritualistic eating of human flesh by other humans. The person being consumed had power, strength, and skills that are ingested by the cannibal. The individual acquires (or appropriates) the power or symbolic necessity of the other through the process of consumption.

This process is similar to how we look at art and digest meaning. It provides a framework or mechanics for understanding a synthesis of appropriative strategies.Cannibalistic art represents the dissolution of categories, it is instead an index of the un-categorical. This process-driven work seeks to critically engage how appropriation and collection function through building on strategies of gleaning, co-optation, and collaboration. For this exhibit we are presenting work that uses cannibalism as a methodological process. The images are cannibalized from multiple sources, from video games, Youtube videos, and the recreation of existing projects of mimicry and play. The attempt is to combine multiple elements in to one body, in essence to merge.

The ingestion and regurgitation of culture is a fundamental homogenizing process of creative production and provides the conceptual framework for this show.

As a continuation of investigations of place and sentimentality via an abstract and minimal vocabulary, Leave a Tender Moment Alone is a collection of works on paper and an installation based on observations of the ephemeral, rhythmic instances of waves crashing on the beach. The undulating lines are abstractions of the clustered shapes a wave takes after it crashes. The compositions suggest, on an altered scale, the frothy sensuality of the moment.

McCambly continues her subtle and expansive exploration of works on paper at IGLOO this month. McCambly has shown her large-scale drawings and paintings and sculptures utilizing intricately cut and suspended paper in numerous national venues including the Dallas Museum of Art, the Santa Monica Museum of Art, The Dallas Contemporary, The Garage Gallery in San Diego, CA and was included in the London Biennale in the U.K.

McCambly earned a B.F.A. and an M.F.A. in Painting and Drawing from the University of North Texas, College of Visual Arts and Design.

This month at IGLOO we have John Oliver Lewis from San Diego. He will be showing ceramic works that lie in between sculpture, painting, and the soft quality of Play-Doh. These objects of imagination are supported by the inspection of architecture, natural land formations and vehicles of travel, informed by cartoons, caricature, knick-knacks, and candy. The resulting individuals are often arranged into groupings and "gangs" based on observed formal and narrative relationships.

CRYSTAL SCHENK

Crystal Schenk will exhibit an interactive sculptural installation in IGLOO during September. The work will transform the gallery walls into a large canvas consisting of magnetized walls which will attract and hold an organic formation of steel pellets hand-placed by viewer participants. Over the course of a month, the installation will undergo continuous transformation as visitors add the steel pellets to the magnetic wall and begin to reshape the growing mass.

Schenk’s work has been exhibited at galleries in Switzerland, New York, Chicago, Portland, and throughout the Midwest. She is an adjunct professor at PNCA, The Art Institute of Portland, and Portland Community College.

We Are All Wrong and It's Alright

Gordon Barnes and Mandee Schroer share Igloo this month, two artists united by approach and sensibility but divided by materials. Both Barnes and Schroer enjoy taking the floating scraps of ideas and materials around them and playing matchmaker with them, sometimes with harmonious intent and others with sadistic curiosity. However, Schroer's material interests tend to center around more tactile and physical qualities whereas Barnes prioritizes materials primarily in terms of conceptual potency or perceived symbolism. In terms of tone, Schroer's work often evokes both a quietly playful sense of wonder at finding oneself in open spaces and an unnerving sense of loneliness bordering on ominous. Barnes' work feels more like a dusty old library with the TV and stereo blasting in the midst of a party that only he is at.

Ryan Burghard's works

Ryan's work is highly skilled in craftmanship, and easy on the eyes. Looking past the immediate imagery, the viewer can see Burghard's concerns with male identity referencing pop culture, mythological history, and spiritualism. The sculptures at both ends of the gallery created a powerful connection of relationships between works. This was a deceptively conceptual show with well made choices and intention by the artist.

Ryan Burghard is a multidisciplinary artist recently relocated to Portland from Madison, WI. Burghard will be exhibiting large photographs and sculptures of various dimensions. Burghard appropriates the cultural symbolism from his youth to re-evaluate the construction of the American male identity. Combining references from comic book heroes, 80's cartoons, sacred geometry, feminist theory, and contemporary male studies, Burghard delivers a portrait of duality that creates an ironic rewriting of the cultural rites of passage the American man must navigate in order to become a socially conscious individual.

Ryan Burghard received his BFA from Bowling Green State in 2003, and his MA and MFA degrees from the University of Wisconsin, Madison in 2005-6. Burghard has showed extensively in Wisconsin, Ohio, Florida, St. Louis, Chicago, Los Angeles, Canada, Australia, and recently Portland. IGLOO will host Burghard's first solo show in Portland.

This month IGLOO features the works of Posie Currin and Jenevive Tatiana. Both will be creating installation based works, along with video, painting, and works on paper. The artists work within the realm of the enigmatic, balancing between the familiar and unfamiliar. The works comment on the interstitial, transitional, and cyclical nature of experience and apprehension. "1:1" suggests works existing within a continuum, defined only by the indeterminacy of their current manifestion.

Animal Magnetism

This month we have a group show of artists from Oregon, Washington, Brooklyn, and Baltimore working in video, sculpture, and works on paper. The artists in Animal Magnetism play with ideas that lure the viewer either into a heightened state of interest, or in contrast a refusal of engagement. The works stimulate questions about what qualities in a work of art create an experience that mesmerizes, or polarizes, the viewer. What does it take to capture a viewers attention and keep it, or push them away? This visual tension resides in each individual work, creating a dialogue between works in the gallery activating the space as a dynamic field of push and pull.

Modou Dieng is a multidisciplinary artist working in mixed-media, painting, photography and installation. Dieng's work conceptualizes views of contemporary life constituted by a mix of humanity, topography, and pastiche of forms. Dieng evokes the city's continuously changing façade, as well as the hybrid character and eclectic combination. The works comment on urban history, race, social status, gender, cosmopolitanism, and belonging.

He is Founder and Curator of Worksound Gallery (Portland) and received his BA from Ecole Nationale Des Beaux Arts (Senegal), and his MFA from San Francisco Art Institute. Dieng has exhibited with numerous galleries and museums including Steve Turner Gallery (Los Angeles), Pascal Polar Gallery (Brussels), Dakar Biennial, Carousel Du Louvre (Paris), Sarah Lawrence College (NY),Umass Boston, Museum of Contemporary African and Diaspora Art (NY), Casa Encendida (Madrid),JoBurg Art Fair (S-Africa). Dieng has done workshops and conferences in several institutions including – Brown University, University of West Florida, Universite Catholique DE Louvain
(Brussels), The Fire Station (Dublin), Denison University, and Ohio University.

This show is awesome. Sometimes life gets you down and you aren't very happy, then you make some art with friends, and everything is better. This month we have a group show with Ryan Burghard, Amber Moss-Jensen, Damien, and myself. Expect lots of innovative works with paper, animation by Damien and a rocking soundtrack. After the gallery closes at 10pm, we will be shifting over to the EAST END on Grand for another art opening. See you sometime between 6 and 10.

November First Thursday Opening

The opening for "Baptized in the River with Two Dips and a Flirt" was fun, colorful and interactive. People loved the Ryan Trecartin video, you could watch it for hours. The Adios Motherfuckers interactive installation was a huge hit. I learned that people loved to create icons of themselves with glue, scraps, glitter, and paint. Thank you to all the patrons who showed up, and the artists for putting it out there. Special thanks to Lauren for putting the show together and the hours installing it. Come by next month for a group show of Portland artists. We also have a few pieces still available from the JSHEA9 show if anyone is interested.

Great show! Tons of people showed up from far and away. J.Shea was in the house along with Yoskay Yamamoto from L.A., some peeps from Santa Barbara and Keiko from Miami. Everyone showed up early and stayed late, but the work was amazing and there was no other place I would rather be. I was entranced by the stop motion video of the mural painting for hours. It was our best show yet. If you haven't seen it, we will be open on Saturdays from 12-5pm, so come and see it out before the end of the month.
